Kelli Ali, formally of the Sneaker Pimps, is the support act for
Garbage’s UK leg of their tour. Not only can the diminutive and
strikingly beautiful Kelli hit the high notes with ease, she also has
the power to belt them out as well. This might surprise anyone who can
remember the Sneaker Pimps track 6 UNDERGROUND. Kelli’s performance is
quite relaxed and this might have something to do with having a decent
backing band to flesh out her songs.
Not knowing what to expect, the songs have more of a rock edge than
anything from Kelli’s previous group. The songs themselves sound as if
they are musically structured differently to the average rock tune. In
spite of this, some tracks such as the melodic SUNLIGHT IN THE RAIN and
HERE COMES THE SUMMER are good enough to be single releases.
Surprisingly though, it is the ballads that totally captures the
audience’s attention. SO LIKE YOU is vocally reminiscent of 6
UNDERGROUND while the closing FELLOW MAN, a mid tempo track, finishes
off a decent set. The songs performed tonight are taken from Kelli’s
forthcoming album TIGERMOUTH, which sounds like an interesting release
to check out.
